Frame Materials: Metal

Frames made of metal are the most popular in the U.S. by far. Gold is durable, hypoallergenic and can be plated over other base metals. Nickel-silver is durable and flexible with many color options but is susceptible to corrosion and can cause allergic reactions in some people. Aluminum also works well for frames. It can be engraved and comes in a variety of colors. Titanium is the newest and hottest trend in frame materials. Titanium frames are hypoallergenic, extra lightweight and very durable. While pure titanium can be hard to adjust but is often used in certain parts of frames, such as bridges and endpieces. Other metals such as memory metal (50% nickel with titanium), Stainless Steel, Magnesium, and Cobalt are also being used today for their lightweight and durable qualities.
